One of the common questions we hear is:
“What about insurance?”
The good news is that lift sharing is already recognised and supported in the UK.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI), whose members represent around 95% of the UK motor insurance market, has long stated that car sharing does not normally affect a driver’s insurance cover, provided that:
✅ You are not making a profit
✅ The contributions only cover running costs
✅ The vehicle seats eight passengers or fewer
For many parents, lift sharing already happens informally between friends, neighbours and classmates. The challenge is that it can be difficult to organise safely and consistently.
That’s why United Parents is building a platform designed specifically for school communities, helping parents connect, coordinate and share journeys more easily.
Why does this matter?
🚗 Fewer cars outside school gates
🌍 Lower emissions from school journeys
⏰ More flexibility for busy families
🤝 Stronger local parent networks
School runs generate an estimated 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂ every year in the UK, yet many parents are travelling identical routes every day.
Sometimes the solution isn’t creating new journeys. It’s helping families share the ones they’re already making.
As with any insurance-related matter, parents should always check with their own insurer, as policies and terms can vary.
